Based in Burke, Virginia, RTR Team 2421 was founded in Fall 2007 as a non-profit community robotics team compromised of home-schooled students. In Winter 2008, the team competed in its “Rookie” season. As the years passed, the team expanded its outreach to include students from local Fairfax County high schools--Lake Braddock Secondary (Burke), West Springfield (Springfield), South County (Lorton), Thomas Jefferson (Alexandria), and Robinson Secondary (Fairfax). In April 2017, the team competed in the FIRST World Championship in St. Louis, Missouri, in the Archimedes Division. Although our 2018 season ended after two district events, we learned a lot as we faced challenges and made some great alliances along the way. Our proudest achievement every season has been how our team members give it their all to the very end of the competition season no matter whether they are ranked at the top or at the bottom!
The 2018 team includes nine home-schoolers, one student from South County, one student from Thomas Jefferson, five students from West Springfield, and 18 students from Lake Braddock. Any student in grade 9-12 is eligible to become a member of our team and design, build, and program a robot to compete in FIRST competitions!
Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology, FIRST Robotics Competition is the ultimate “Sport for the Mind.” Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of high school students (some with as few as 15 members) are challenged to raise funds, design a team “brand,” hone teamwork skills, and build and program a robot to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors.
